Academic Preparation Program

Program Information

The Academic Preparation program offers international students a program of study which will provide them with the skills necessary for success in an English-language university or work environment.

The Academic Preparation program consists of three different levels of English language instruction. The levels are:

• Beginner
• Intermediate
• Advanced

Students attend classes full-time, Monday to Friday. The program can be completed in one calendar year (three semesters). The courses focus on all skills: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Vocabulary, Grammar and Writing.

Upon arrival in Canada, prospective students are given an English Placement Test and are placed at the appropriate Academic Preparation level based on their English skills.

Upon completion of this Program, students will be eligible for the following two options:

• Dorset College offers students the unique opportunity to complete a range of courses that are in most cases transferable towards a Bachelor's Degree at a public Canadian university, including Acadia University, Dalhousie University, Cape Breton University (CBU) and other leading universities.

• Students can apply for undergraduate admission to other North American universities, provided that they meet all individual university entrance requirements.

Admission Requirements

• Students must have completed high school or its equivalent.

Academic Standards

Students must achieve a grade of 65% or more to pass a course.
Dorset College places great importance on attendance. Students are not permitted to miss more than 20 percent of the course curriculum through absence.
