Daily Essentials & Civic Life

Navigating a new country starts with managing key administrative tasks. Here is what you need to know about setting up your life in Canada.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

A SIN is a nine-digit number you need to work in Canada, and to receive government benefits and services. As an international student, you may be eligible to apply for a SIN.

How to Apply: You can apply for a SIN online, by mail, or in person at a Service Canada Centre. The Surrey Service Canada Centre is located in Central City Shopping Centre, just a short walk from our college.

BC Services Card

This is your provincial health card and a primary form of government ID in British Columbia. It is essential for accessing medical services in the province.

How to Apply: You must enroll in the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) first. After you have been approved, you can get a BC Services Card at an ICBC Driver Licensing Office or participating Service BC locations.

Banking

Opening a Canadian bank account is a priority for managing your finances.

Major Banks: Canada's largest banks, including RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, and CIBC, offer specialized accounts for international students with no monthly fees. Many also allow you to start the application process from your home country.

What You'll Need: Typically, you'll need your passport, study permit, proof of enrollment from Dorset College, and a second piece of identification.

Interac e-Transfer: A popular digital service for sending and receiving money directly between Canadian bank accounts.

Transportation and Getting Around

Dorset College's prime location in Surrey Central makes it incredibly convenient to get around using public transit.

TransLink: This is the public transit authority for Metro Vancouver. Services include the SkyTrain, buses, and the SeaBus.

SkyTrain: The King George Station on the Expo Line is just steps from our campus. This high-speed light rail system connects you directly to key areas like Metrotown and Downtown Vancouver.

Buses: The Surrey Central Transit Exchange is a major hub, providing bus routes to almost every part of the city and beyond.

Compass Card: Use a Compass Card to pay for all TransLink services. You can load money onto the card or purchase a monthly pass.

Childcare Services

For students with children, accessing reliable childcare is a key consideration. The childcare system in BC is regulated by the provincial government, with costs and availability varying by location and facility.

Finding a Licensed Provider: To ensure safety and quality, look for licensed childcare facilities. The provincial government provides a resource to help you find one.

Childcare Subsidies: The BC government may offer financial assistance to eligible families to help with the cost of childcare. You can find more information on eligibility and how to apply on the government's website.
